Years ago, this idea of junk journaling crossed my digital path, but I didn’t think too much about it. Over the years, as it kept coming into my purview, I decided to learn more about this mysterious craft.
Once I dipped my toe in, I was hooked! I’m still learning the craft – I think always learning more about junk journaling is one of the things I love most about it – but it also marries so many of my interests into one: writing, journaling, recycling/upcycling, and paper crafting.
As I experiment with creating different types of junk journals, I’m realizing I love them all! You can create junk journals from old cereal or cracker boxes, such as this mini-journal made from a popcorn box:

You can upcycle old book covers! I try to use damaged vintage book covers that I find at thrift and antique shops, but sometimes I will use a more current, sturdy book cover, such as this lovely Halloween-inspired junk journal:

Another popular method for creating junk journals is to use decorative card stock. While this option doesn’t necessarily meet “junk” journaling criteria of recyclying, reusing, or upcycling, it’s still a fun way to create a junk journal for a specific purpose. Take this “Thankful Thoughts” junk journal I created to keep record of what you are grateful for this holiday season:

Junk Journaling, whether I’m creating journals or working in my own, has been a source of refuge and escape during some very difficult times! It’s one of the few activities I can get lost in and shed the outside stressors.
Most of the junk journals I create are up for sale in my Etsy shop at Papier Memoir by Renae.
