Summer Solstice: Reflecting on What I love About Summer

Summer is my least favorite season! An unpopular opinion, especially on the Central Coast of California, but the cool, crisp days of Autumn hold my heart.

I’m not a fan of fireworks, so the Fourth of July brings with it anxiety. Living in a small coastal town, I also dislike the hoards of tourists that show up during the summer months; I wouldn’t mind tourists so much if they would treat our home with courteousness and respect.

This isn’t to say summer is without its charms, though, so on this summer solstice, I laid on my back in the ballpark grass and reflected.

Here are some things that no other season can bring quite like summer:

  1. Barefoot Walks in the Grass – Here on the Central Coast, we can walk barefoot any season, but there’s something special about doing it during the summer months. It brings a feeling of nostalgia; of simpler times.
  2. Dusk – As the sun fades into setting, the dusk air fills with the songs of frogs and crickets. Nothing soothes me quite like this summer sound. It makes me want to freeze time!
  3. The Waning Days – Summer solstice may be one of my favorite days of the year, not because it is the longest day of the year, but because it marks the beginning of days getting shorter. Another unpopular opinion in my parts, but oh, those early evenings!

As we say goodnight to the longer days, I will sleep well on this night knowing tomorrow’s daylight will be shorter 🙂
