Why I Write Copy

Writing has always been at my core! I haven’t always nurtured this part of me, though, because sometimes we find ourselves so busy surviving that creativity becomes an after thought; an old love relegated to the murky memories we no longer have space for but refuse to abandon completely.

In recent years, I have discovered a way to leverage my love of writing, while also surviving: copywriting. Through copywriting, I get to marry my love of writing and words and academia!

I could end my post here, because I answered the question, “Why do I want to write copy?” But, I’ll detail the type of copy writing I am most drawn to and why.

  1. White Papers: A white paper brings together storytelling and research in the form of a written report or guide on a specific topic. A well-written white paper presents a a problem and proposes a solution, all while positioning the writer as the reader’s best option to solving this problem. In short, a white paper is persuasive prose. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it?!?
  2. Case Studies: Case studies aren’t simply a customer review of a specific product or service; an effective case study takes the reader on a journey through one (or more) person’s experience solving a problem with the author’s product or service. This narrative journey serves to build trust and credibility through a genuine, relatable story. And, who doesn’t love a good story?
  3. Newsletters: Most people know what a newsletter is, but did you know newsletters can curate long-term relationships and loyalty? Through an ongoing and regularly scheduled newsletter campaign, companies and individuals can create, nurture, and maintain customer loyalty for months, even years, beyond an initial sale. The challenge of creating new and relevant content on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis is stimulating.
  4. Curriculum: Aside from working with my kiddos, yes – even the “needy” ones – designing learning experiences gave me the most joy as a teacher. Sure, I had district-mandated curriculum in most content areas, but I loved feeding my creativity by designing interdisciplinary units from scratch. Mind you, this was pre-Pinterest and TPT, so I created my curriculum the old fashioned way – pen-to-paper or typing in Microsoft Word.

These are the top four sources of copy I write. Interested in my services as a copywriter? Here are some work samples:
